Applications for the 2025-2026 academic year will be open from October 23, 2024 to January 7, 2025.
The Residential Education Student Leader selection process includes Resident Advisors (RA) and Community Advisors (CA). Below are brief descriptions of these student leader roles.
- Resident Advisors (RAs) serve on each floor to facilitate a cooperative, considerate group living environment and to promote learning in the floor/house/building community.
- Community Advisors (CAs) support our safety elements and responses on campus to promote a safe environment for our residents.
Eligibility Requirements for Applicants:
- Must attend one (1) mandatory information session during the 2024-2025 school year
- Must complete the application in full and submit it on time through the Housing U portal
- Must be enrolled as University of Utah students for the entirety of the Fall 2024/Spring 2025 academic year in a full time or part time capacity
- Must have completed two (2) full time semesters at the University of Utah by June 1, 2025
- Must have a minimum (cumulative and Fall 2024) GPA of 2.5. Any RA serving in an Honors LLC must have a minimum (cumulative and Fall 2024) GPA of 3.5 and be enrolled in the Honor program.
- Must be able to serve for the entire Fall 2025/Spring 2026 academic year, if selected
- Must not exceed 5 hours of work per week across ALL other university jobs (including the University Hospital).
- Must be able to attend an in-person, on-campus interview (dates coming soon). A small number of virtual interviews may be available for candidates experiencing extenuating circumstances, upon request - requests are not guaranteed to be approved.
Mandatory Information Sessions
All candidates must attend one (1) information session. Info Sessions are a chance for you to learn more about the HRE Student Leader roles and ask questions. These sessions will be staffed by current HRE staff, ready to help you navigate your process. We have virtual and in-person options. Attendance will be taken at each session. Application will only be considered if the applicant has attended an information session as confirmed by their attendance sign in. See the “Timeline” sections below for a list of the session dates.

Student Leader Housing Options
Student Leaders are placed in all HRE’s on campus residential buildings. Below are the potential placements for a student leader for the 2025-2026 school year. All student leaders get a single bedroom (please note this single bedroom may be within a suite or apartment). These options are subject to change based on staffing needs, availability, etc.
- Benchmark Plaza: Single room in a 2, 3, or 4 person apartment; shared bathroom with apartment mates
- Shoreline Ridge: Single room in a 2, 3, or 4 person apartment; shared bathroom with apartment mates
- Sage Point: Single room in a 2 person suite; shared bathroom with suitemate
- Chapel Glen: Single room in a 2 person suite; shared bathroom with suitemate
- Officers Circle (RAs only): Single room in a 10-14 person house; private bathroom
- Gateway Heights: Single room; private bathroom
- Kahlert Village: Single room in “suites” area; private bathroom OR single room in “cluster” area; shared bathroom with cluster
- Impact and Prosperity Epicenter: Single room; shared bathroom with end cap residents OR single room; shared bathroom with single/double residents
- Marriott Honors Community: Single room in a 4 or 8 person apartment; private bathroom
- Lassonde Studios (CAs only): Single room; shared floor bathroom

If you are an upper-division active member of the Honors College then these communities might be a good fit for you. Residents who live in the Thesis Mentoring Communities have increased access to faculty, staff, and peer support as they pursue one of the most crucial points of their Honors degree, the thesis. This support will help connect you to research opportunities and provide an ideal environment highly conducive to your academic pursuits. Housed in Marriott Honors Community and Officers Circle.
If you are a first-year resident and a part of the Honors College then this community will allow you to start making a network of friends and support surrounding your academic pursuits. Housed in Kahlert Village Honors Tower and Sage Point.
Encompasses students who are committed to engaging with the community. You do not have to have prior community engagement experience, but a desire to learn more about community with other like-minded individuals. Residents of the Bennion Service House will examine their own community engagement work and participate in a variety of programs, projects, dialogues, and other engagements. Housed in Officers Circle.
Is a living learning community for first-year students that allows residents to gain a deeper knowledge of community engagement and provides more opportunities for residents to use their knowledge through civic habits, civic skills, civic action, and civic values to engage with local community organizations and the Bennion Center. Housed in Kahlert Village Community Engagement Tower.
For any students enrolled in the College of Fine Arts. The Fine Arts house seeks to maximize talent and creativity among its community members. If you live in the house, you will interact with those who love both visual and performing arts. You will attend galleries, shows, recitals, and performances of your neighbors. Housed in Officers Circle.
Open to any student enrolled in the College of Humanities and residents of this house receive $1,000 scholarship toward housing. If you are a part of this community, you will be part of a thriving community where the residents are committed to becoming better-informed, thoughtful world citizens. Housed in Officers Circle.
If you are an upper-division student in the John and Marcia Price College of Engineering, the Kennecott Engineering House is an ideal environment for you. This community is for high achieving engineering students seeking a community that will support them in their educational pursuits and offer academic support to enrich their college experience. If you are a first-year student who is hoping to pursue a degree in engineering, this is an excellent opportunity for you. If you are a first-year student who is excited about all of the outdoor opportunities available in Utah, the Outdoor Leadership Floor is a great community option for you. Residents of this floor will have the opportunity to work with the University of Utah's Outdoor Adventure group to plan and participate in many activities in the great outdoors. Housed in Kahlert Village Health & Wellness Tower.
If you are a first-year student looking to create a community with fellow peers of all backgrounds, this is a great place for you! There will be exploration of identity and discussions surrounding everyday societal impacts and how to serve your communities. If you are a first-year student interested in connecting with other students who have a common interest in affecting positive change with respect to environmental and societal issues while learning about sustainability and its career pathways, then this Living Learning Community is for you! Being a part of this community means that you will have the opportunity to engage with students and faculty in the School of the Environment, Society & Sustainability (ESS), as well as activities beyond traditional coursework. Examples include participation in events and projects with partners on or off campus, field trips to local destinations or university field stations, inclusion in programs sponsored by student groups within ESS, and exposure to research conducted within ESS. No. Student Leaders do not get to directly choose their housing assignment. However, student leaders will be able to state their community preference throughout the application or interview process. Those preferences will be taken into consideration during selection/placement, along with many other factors. All student leaders get single bedrooms, but may be assigned to a suite or apartment in some communities. Please note that HRE makes placement decisions based on the needs of the community.

Yes. Attending an information session is mandatory in order to be eligible for a student leader position (unless you are a current RA or CA with HRE). We track this through a sign in form at the meeting. You only need to attend one session, and we do offer virtual sessions. You are free to submit your application before or after you attend a session (we suggest submitting it after you attend, if possible).
No. Applications are reviewed to determine which applicants will be invited to interview based on their answers to the short answer questions and their eligibility.
