I have always had a great interest in architecture and construction. Living in housing only excited that more with the construction of Kahlert Village (KV), but all great things unfortunately must come to an end. KV’s construction was completed, so now it’s time to look at some of the new upcoming university construction projects that make me wide eyed and just a little too curious!

HELIX

The new Healthcare, Education, Leaders and Innovation Complex (HELIX) is part of the ongoing goal of University Health to transform the Medical Campus and modernize it to continue its leading reputation in the nation. This project will make way for employees from a number of departments including anesthesiology, pediatrics, surgery and more to have updated office and work space as the medical school undergoes replacement in the coming years. The building will be 259,000 sq. ft. and consist of 5.5 floors connected to other U health buildings by a sky bridge across Mario Capecchi Drive. Construction is scheduled to begin in February 2021 and be complete in early 2023.

Annex Demolition

As we all know, parking can be an interesting conversation on campus. With the completion of Kahlert Village, parking became a hot topic once again, but good news is in store! The old Annex Building, constructed more than 70 years ago, is set to be demolished and replaced with a 300-spot parking lot by August. This iconic building was built quick and lived a long life as classrooms, offices and workspaces for the University since World War II.

Katherine F. Kirk Center for Comprehensive Cancer Care and Women’s Cancers

The new center will expand the already impressive Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) by nearly 220,000 sq. ft., and it will add 48 new patient rooms, four floors of clinical space, two floors of faculty space, and two floors of future expansion. HCI is the only national cancer institute designated comprehensive cancer center in the Mountain West, and the first phase of HCI opened in 1999, four years after the creation of the Huntsman Cancer Foundation. HCI is also completing its new Proton Therapy Lab, of which there are only about 100 in the world and will provide modern, advanced radiation therapies to patients.

Ken Garff Performance Zone

The ongoing expansion of the Rice-Eccles Stadium is to close the south end zone, creating a full bowl and adding nearly 5,000 additional seats. The Ken Garff Performance Zone replaces and expands the old end zone, while honoring the heritage of the stadium. Creating new access for fans and athletes, it also pays honor to the 2002 Olympic cauldron, relocating it on a new prominent pedestal overlooking the valley. The expansion is set to be complete in 2021.
